Remodeling is on the rise and the kitchen is getting a lot of homeowners' attention. With resources like Pinterest and Houzz.com, homeowners are able to easily decide and share their favorite designs and styles in the kitchen. While some of the trends may be similar to last year's list of favorites (some fads are here to stay!), others will define the years ahead. If you're planning to design a new kitchen or renovate your existing one, consider this list of our favorite emerging kitchen trends of 2014. Darker Tones [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="502"] Via Omega Cabinetry[/caption] According to Zillow Digs, lighter neutrals are out and bolder darker tones are in. Warm browns, rich blacks, or deep shades of blue and green for paint on the walls, cabinets, and smaller accents like the backsplash make a dramatic statement in the kitchen. Bold Lighting Bolder tones aren't the only way to create excitement. Oversized light fixtures add some wow while still giving a great sense of depth perception and creating drama in a room with a typical low ceiling. White Kitchens Despite the move towards bolder, darker tones, white kitchens are still high in demand. They are easily paired with stylish appliances, open layouts, and gorgeous details. White kitchens also make a great neutral backdrop for unexpected pops of personality. Smart Storage [caption id="attachment_244" align="alignnone" width="950"] Via Schrock[/caption] Whether your kitchen is large or small, creative solutions can help make the most of your existing space. Smart storage options like pull-out wastebaskets, lazy Susans, and tray dividers will maximize cabinet space by making hard-to-reach spaces more accessible. The right storage adds function to the kitchen and are often what homeowners end up loving the most. Open Shelves Although open shelving is not necessarily a new trend, they are just as popular this year as ever. These shelves allow homeowners to display their favorite gadgets while also giving quick access to the items used most often. And we love the airy feeling they add to any sized kitchen! No Upper Cabinets Similar to open shelves, homeowners are taking the “less is more” concept more extensively to forgoing upper cabinets. This allows more of the open concept homeowners desire while allowing more space for natural window lighting, wall-mounted light fixtures, or even open shelves. Floor-to-Ceiling Tiles Backsplash tiles that reach the ceiling marry both form and function. They create a focal point while visually expanding a space, adding some much needed depth to small, dark kitchens. We love the contrast and statement these dark tiles create against white cabinets!
