The small house movement has homeowners getting their creative juices flowing to get the most out of their space. From cabinetry to appliances, every square foot in these smaller kitchens must be utilized and must be functional. While large islands, banquette seating, and breakfast nooks are not typical features to any smaller kitchen, additional seating doesn't have to be completely thrown out. By using as little as 12 inches in depth, a kitchen breakfast bar immediately adds 2-4 additional seats, as well as a whole new atmosphere to your space. Imagine handing your child an afternoon snack without leaving the kitchen as they finish their homework, or entertaining your best friend while prepping for dinner. Don't let a small home stop you. Get inspired with these small kitchen bar ideas and find the right design for your home. Flush Counter If you are remodeling soon and will be installing a new countertop, consider extending it over the edge for a simple bar. Since this type of bar will be at the same standard heights as your countertops, the depth should be around 15" to give you proper knee space. Two-Tiered Set above the counter, a two-tiered breakfast bar separates the eating area from the prep area. These bars can be more difficult to add to an existing countertop unless the countertop is already flush with the lower cabinets. The recommended depth is 12" since these bars require higher seats and less knee room is needed. Floating Raised If you already have a countertop overhang, consider a floating raised bar that attaches either to the lower cabinets or from the countertops. You can match the bar to your existing countertop or mismatch materials. We personally love the look of floating glass. Below Another easy solution to an existing overhang would be to add a bar below the countertop. This is especially beneficial if your countertops are already above standard height. If you don't want to lose height, however, you can place the bar top immediately below the countertop overhang. Unattached If you have no space to spare or prefer a breakfast bar somewhere else, you can achieve the same concept near the kitchen or dining room. This is a great use of a bare wall and allows you to really get creative with materials and colors. Now look around your home. Do you have 12 inches to spare?
