Your kitchen’s backsplash plays an important role in protecting your kitchen wall from messy food splatters and harsh cleaning chemicals that are easy to clean. It also plays an important role in potentially providing a beautiful focal point that ties together your kitchen’s entire look. While the kitchen cabinets and countertop are very large, the backsplash is small enough to be the perfect place to add your own personality and style without becoming overwhelming or overly fussy. If you’re still deciding on a backsplash for a new kitchen or ready to add some flair to your existing kitchen, here are 5 different backsplash designs you don’t want to miss. Bigger Subway Tile The traditional 3 x 6” subway tile has been a popular choice in the kitchen for many years. While we still love the classic look of traditional white subway tile, we say take it a step further by going bigger. Instead of the common 3 x 6”, opt for a longer 4 x 8” or even a 4 x 12”. The larger, longer subway tile can help make smaller kitchens appear to have more space while creating a feeling of continuity. Ceiling Height Typically the 18” between the countertop and upper cabinetry is considered the space for a backsplash. However, more and more homeowners continue to opt for open shelves or windows in place of upper cabinetry. Instead of instinctively stopping the backsplash at the common 18”, we suggest taking your backsplash from countertop all the way to the ceiling. Ceiling-height tile can create a uniform look, extend the look of your walls, and reflect extra light all while providing an incredible backdrop for your kitchen. Arabesque & Herringbone Pattern As we mentioned earlier, subway tile is a popular choice in the kitchen since it’s a beautiful pattern that won’t just suddenly become outdated next year (we’re looking at you, brass hardware). But if you’re tired of the same straight-lined look and are ready for a new pattern, arabesque and herringbone are the patterns for you. These beautiful patterns provide a fancy, fresh look that is just classic enough to stay in fashion for a lifetime. No More 4” Backsplash It’s still up for debate whether the 4” backsplash from the countertop is a desired feature or not. On one hand, it helps keep spilled liquids from damaging your lower cabinets while creating a uniform look. On the other hand, it may appear outdated and skew the look of your kitchen’s height. Ultimately, we say do without the matchy 4” backsplash and opt for a full backsplash. Focal Stainless Steel Sheet Touted for its incredible durability and sleek visual appeal, stainless steel is the most popular material for appliances and commercial-grade kitchens. It also makes for a great backsplash that’s easy to clean. However, an entire wall of stainless steel can be a bit overwhelming. Instead, make a statement with a stainless steel sheet behind your cooktop or range. This design feature adds an industrial, sleek look without becoming overly fussy. Schedule an appointment with our kitchen design experts to discover which backsplash will take your kitchen to that next level.
