As we enter the New Year and look forward to the latest kitchen trends 2019 has to offer, we must first take a look at which kitchen trends are on their way out. Oversized hardware With seamless cabinets on the rise, cabinet hardware is virtually disappearing. While there are so many beautiful designs and materials out there, oversized knobs and pulls make a large kitchen feel bulky and a small kitchen feel cluttered. Smaller, minimal hardware add enough detail without becoming overbearing. Modern Farmhouse Who doesn’t love Joanna Gaines’ modish take on the farmhouse boutique, featuring the horizontal lines of painted shiplap and lovely porcelain farmhouse sinks? It’s still a beautiful look, especially in an actual older farmhouse. However, in newer constructions, the large burlap wreaths, galvanized milk cans, and “fresh egg” signs scattered everywhere is becoming a thing of the past. Brass Overload The design world has recently embraced the shift from cool brushed nickel to warm shades of brass, copper, and rose gold. However, because these metals feel more trendy than the more classic metals of oil-rubbed bronze or chrome, it’s best to use them in moderation. Instead of running out and swapping out every piece of metal you own for a gold or copper shade, try exchanging only a few at a time and see how it feels. In fact, mixing your metal palette can actually give your kitchen a more sophisticated feel. Gloss Finishes We all love a shiny new toy, whether it’s a sparkly new appliance or polished countertops. However, high-gloss is taking a backseat to popular matte and flat finishes, such as the new Matte Series from Cafe Appliances and Cambria® Matte Finish countertops.  Industrial Kitchens Industrial chic became a huge trend a few years ago. With a mixture of Edison bulbs, galvanized metals, exposed pipes, and wood beams, the look attempted to emulate an upscale loft-style. However, this look made many kitchens feel more drafty like an old warehouse than a welcoming place you want to spend time in. As with most trends, this one was better played in small doses. Neutral Trends Remember a few years ago when everything was beige? And then everyone started painting everything in blueish-greys which then somehow the two got mixed and everything became “greige”? Just as home decor shifts away from cooler metals to make room for warmer shades of gold, it will also step away from the cool greys to make room for warmer greys, greige tones, and white. Trends will always come and go but the goal is to create a space that reflects your personal taste and style.
