As the largest appliance in your home, the refrigerator stands tall as a monument in both form and function. It is the first appliance you notice when you walk into a kitchen and the one you will use the most in your own home. It’s easy to see a beautiful refrigerator and decide then and there that is the refrigerator you want for your own home. But just as the style of your refrigerator can make or break the look of your kitchen, its capabilities can do the same to your kitchen’s functionality. You may love the look of a built-in refrigerator but is it really the best option for your large family? You may love the price tag of a standard refrigerator but does it keep in style with your professional kitchen? When shopping for a new refrigerator, choose one that fits both your kitchen’s style as well as your lifestyle. Below we explain the differences in refrigerator styles so you can make an informed decision. Standard-Depth Refrigerators Also known as freestanding refrigerators, these traditional refrigerators are the most common and usually sit between 30 to 34 inches in depth. Thanks to their larger size, these refrigerators offer roomy interiors (up to 28 cubic feet) which can be ideal if you have a larger family and are also more affordable than other refrigerators while still offering the latest features. Standard depth refrigerators are also simple to install, rarely requiring a professional, and can be easily moved to your next home. Counter-Depth Refrigerators Designed to sit flush with your kitchen cabinets, counter-depth refrigerators are approximately 25 to 30 inches in depth. These refrigerators are considered more fashionable than standard refrigerators as they sit practically flush with surrounding cabinetry to give your kitchen a uniform look, unlike standard refrigerators which can stick out nearly 3” from lower cabinets. While they are generally more expensive than standard refrigerators, they are more affordable than built-in refrigerators so you can enjoy the built-in look without the built-in price. Keep in mind that a small depth also means a lower capacity for storing foods (up to 20 cubic feet) so be sure to find one with the space to suit your food storage needs. Built-In & Column Refrigerators An essential for luxury kitchens, built-in and column refrigerators are around the same depth as counter-depth refrigerators but offer a completely custom, tailor-made look. These refrigerators are usually taller to make up for lost space from the shallow depth though still provide less space when compared to equally wide standard depth refrigerators. Built-in and column refrigerators sit perfectly flush with surrounding cabinets for a flawless seamless design. They can even be integrated with a panel door that matches your existing cabinets to blend and camouflage the refrigerator entirely. Additionally, built-in refrigerators come in wider sizes than freestanding refrigerators do, with options up to 48 inches in width for a higher capacity (up to 29 cubic feet).
