Trends On The Way Out 2019

Posted on Dec 19, 2019

As we wrap up 2019, we look forward to new and brighter things in the kitchen design world. While some trends from the past year will make their way into the New Year, some trends won’t last much longer. Here are a list of trends making their grand exit of the kitchen.

Marble Countertops

Marble recently became a huge hit in the home, making an appearance in the kitchen, bathroom, and just about any piece of decor it could get its metaphorical hands on. Now before you argue that the beautiful look of marble is certainly not a dying trend just yet, we are simply referring to actual marble being used in the kitchen. As many disgruntled homeowners have discovered, this material is very porous and susceptible to staining and chipping which makes it a not-so-great option for such a high-traffic area like the kitchen. Fortunately, you can still enjoy the look of marble in all of its glory with engineered quartz designed by Cambria to look just like marble but with all the durability and stain-resistance you could ask for.

All-White Kitchens

We have always said the classic white kitchen will never go anywhere - and we still believe this to be true. These kitchens are gloriously bright and perfectly neutral for any kitchen style, and will always have a place in the design world. However, as color, material, and texture make their way to the center of the kitchen design stage to give your kitchen style and character, the all-white kitchen is viewed as boring and lacking in personality. If you are still dedicated to the all-white kitchen, we recommend at least including some texture and materials to add a little personality.

Speckled Granite

Designers have been saying for a while that granite countertops are on the way out. We still believe there is a market for granite countertops as it still offers a beautiful look desired by many homeowners. However, we do agree that there are so many more design options you can create with solid surface and quartz countertops which are more sustainable and maintainable. If you’re building a new kitchen or upgrading your current one, we recommend looking towards more sustainable materials that will be stylish for years to come.

Barn Doors

Ever since Fixer Upper stars Chip & Joanna Gaines started putting these dreamy country-style kitchens into every Texas home they touched, farmhouse kitchens have become popular all over the country. However, a lot of the components that pull together this look are on their way out, such as barn doors. These doors have probably been on the outs for awhile now, but are officially considered done according to TheKitchn.com. Unfortunately, these doors just don’t make sense in a lot of places, especially for the amount of wall space they require. Plus, unless you live in the country or in an actual farmhouse, these doors can feel out of place and overdone.

Embellished Cabinetry

As minimalism and simplicity make its way into home design, more homeowners are opting for a contemporary kitchen without all the fluff. We have seen a rise of sleek cabinetry which offers a simple, clean look in the kitchen, and a decrease in crown molding and embellishments. To keep these kitchens from looking boring over too basic, it’s important to include certain design aspects that create interest such as window doors, backsplash, and layers of lighting.
