As we wrap up the end of 2016, we're all looking forward to what the future brings in kitchen design trends. Is grey the new black? Is black the new black?! Are kitchen sinks still "a thing"? Of course they are, they're sinks. However, before we say hello to what 2017 has to offer, it's just as important that we look at what trends are on their way "out." According to online kitchen gurus, it might be time to say goodbye to that hilarious kitchen quote, overly open concept, dark colors, small backsplash tiles, and more.blog2 Short Cabinets Although it might seem short cabinets would help a kitchen feel larger by not taking up as much space, they can actually bring a ceiling down. Instead, opt for tall cabinets which make a kitchen look bigger and extended. Dark Browns Homebuyers are looking for kitchens that feel clean and bright, with white cabinetry and lighter countertops. Therefore, darker woods such as cherry and walnut, and metals like oil brushed bronze and cast iron, are on the "out." Open-Plan Living Okay so this one may seem a little misleading. While open concept kitchens are still in high-demand, homeowners are also looking for some balance that includes some separation from the dining and living rooms. So before you tear down every wall around your kitchen, consider at least a half wall between the other rooms in your house. Subway Tile Although we don't necessarily agree this trend is "out," we can recognize it might be losing its freshness due to its popularity (but hello, that's because it's timeless!). Instead of going with the "safe" option, try a fresher option like shiplap. Quotation Artwork From framed quotes about minding your own biscuits to wall decals about the secret ingredient being love (and also salt), the kitchen is apparently not the place for quotations. Sayings about food and other mushy things may be more appropriate in the living room next to family photos. Distressed Cabinets Antiquing, distressing, and anything rustic-related has been on major trend the past few years thanks to good ole Pinterest. However, distressed cabinetry (that is, painted cabinets with wood showing through on the edges) can actually make a kitchen seem messier as opposed to rustic. Instead, keep cabinetry wood and leave the distressing to an accent shelf. Faux Finish According to online kitchen designers, faux finishes including stone and marble are the trend to ditch this year. We actually thought this trend was already out a few years back, but if you're considering stylizing your kitchen in sponged-on grain and veins, definitely reconsider. Clean, sleek finishes are much more timeless. Tiny Backsplash Although sheets of patterned tile on mesh backing seem super convenient for a DIY weekend project, the trend of small thin tiles is on the way out. Instead, opt for large glass tiles or shiplap which offer clean horizontal lines. Bare Windows Leaving kitchen windows bare became a popular trend since it imitates trendy loft living. However, bare windows also means no privacy. Instead of leaving windows desolate, opt for minimalist window treatments, such as these easy DIY curtains made from napkins. Matchy-matchy Hardware From knobs and pulls to faucets and light fixtures, matching metal can create a cohesive look. However, it's not necessary to go with only one metal to create unity. Mix it up by matching different metals to create a more eclectic, refined look. Match matte blacks with brushed nickel, or oil brushed bronze with chrome.

No matter what anyone says about what's "in" or what's "out", your kitchen style is completely subjective to your own personal taste. So if you love humungous kitchen quotes with a whisk that says "whip it, whip it good" or cabinetry so dark it's almost impossible to see, you do you.
