What is The Bottom Drawer of An Oven Used For?

Posted on Feb 1st, 2021

Today’s kitchen appliances have so many features and functions that it can be difficult to know how to use all of them. For example, do you really know what to store in every drawer in your fridge? Or what every dishwasher cycle is on your dishwasher? Or when it comes to your oven, do you really know what every door is for?

That’s right, we’re talking about the notoriously ominous bottom drawer featured under your gas or electric oven. Is it just added storage to keep your pots and pans readily available, or is it for something else? The answer is that it depends on the oven. Some bottom drawers are in fact for storing pots and pans, some actually serve a helpful purpose you will definitely want to be aware of!

A Broiler Drawer
If you have a bottom drawer under your gas range’s oven or wall oven, it is probably an added broiler. A typical oven uses ambient heat to surround and cook your food. A broiler, on the other hand, uses heat from flames above (think upside-down grill). Check your oven's control panel, either near the buttons of the settings or near the knobs, and look for a control labeled “Broil” or “Broiler”. The drawer should also have a built-in rack and a drip pan. Don’t worry if yours is missing - you can find a replacement part designed for your oven. If you’re still not sure if yours is a broiler, you can also check your range’s manual booklet or online.

A Warming Drawer
Whether you’re preparing a multi-part meal, running out of space with just one oven for a large meal, or prepping your meal a few hours early, a warming drawer can be extremely helpful (and even necessary!). A warming drawer is a drawer that keeps your already-cooked (and hot!) foods warm until dinnertime so your foods can be served at the right temperature. If your oven is electric, the bottom drawer very well could be a warming drawer. It may have a wire rack to allow you to stack items or it may just be an empty space. Look at your oven's control panel or near the knobs, there may be a control labeled “Warming Drawer”.

A Storage Drawer
If you’ve checked “no” for the above functions, your bottom drawer is likely an added space for pots and pans, cookie sheets, and other cooking items that are hard to store in your cabinets. If you look into your bottom drawer and don’t find a cooking element or any racks, it is likely a storage drawer.
