Which Dishwasher Is Quieter: Profile Vs Monogram

Posted on March 30th, 2021

It may not seem like there are many differences between dishwasher models today. Of course some have stainless steel tubs and others have a third rack, but they all have one main job: clean the dishes, and do it quietly! The last thing you want is the loud humming of your dishwasher during the quiet setting of a fancy dinner party. Or the loud gyrating as it switches through wash cycles during family movie night. With open-concept houses and hardwood floors still popular choices for today’s home, even a fairly quiet appliance can suddenly become amplified into other rooms. Fortunately, today’s conventional dishwasher is far quieter than it used to be back in the day, and higher models and brands offer practically silent operations to the point that you need some type of indicator to even know it’s on.

One question we get often is whether one dishwasher model is quieter than the other. Fortunately, manufacturers make this easy by providing the level of decibels an appliance will give off during operation. What impacts this number is the smooth operation of the motor, the durability and thickness of the materials used to build the appliance, and the insulation surrounding the outside of the dishwasher. So a dishwasher with a stainless steel tub will naturally be quieter than one with a plastic tub, just as 2-inches of insulation will make for a quieter dishwasher than 1-inch. Also, any dishwasher with a garbage disposal will clearly be louder than one without. And finally, how water is pumped into, through, and out of the machine will contribute to much of the sound you hear.

So if your goal is to have the most silent dishwasher, go for one that has a low decibel rating. The typical range for dishwashers is between 46 to 60 decibels, but can be as low as 39 decibels. For some comparison purposes, a 10 dB is comparable to normal breathing, while 30 dBs is the sound of a whisper. GE Profile and Monogram both offer models that are rated at 39 dBa - a mere whisper. The GE Profile PDT785SYNFS offers a fingerprint resistant top control with Sanitize Cycle to kill germs and Twin Turbo Dry Boost to ensure dishes come out clean every time, at a silent 39 dBa operation. The Monogram ZDT985SPNSS is a Smart Fully Integrated Dishwasher with Steam + Sanitation and an advanced wash cycle with over 90 powerful jets, and is also rated at 39 dBa.
