However, depending on the model, they still offer all the latest in refrigerator technology and convenience. They are also referred to as freestanding refrigerators because they stand on their own so they require no custom installation and can even be placed at the end of cabinets. They can also be moved to the next home so homeowners don’t mind investing in higher-end models with all the latest features. Full-depth refrigerators are generally the best option for homes of families of 4 or more who are also on a budget.

Counter-Depth Refrigerators

The first difference most people notice about counter-depth refrigerators is their sleek design.  These refrigerators sit flush with the kitchen’s lower cabinets and countertop, offering the look of a custom, built-in refrigerator without the built-in price. At approximately 25 to 30 inches in depth, counter-depth refrigerators don’t stick out as far as standard-depth refrigerators, allowing you to move more fluidly throughout the kitchen with the obstruction of an appliance in your way. It also allows you to access your food easier without as much bending or reaching deep into your fridge. However, a decrease in depth also means less capacity so many counter-depth refrigerators are typically wider than full-size refrigerators to increase the storage space. Always check the capacity to make sure it’s large enough to meet your food storage needs. Although certain models can vary, counter-depth refrigerators generally cost more than full-size refrigerators but less than built-in refrigerators. They also may require custom installation and even cabinetry work if your kitchen isn’t already set up for a counter-depth fridge, so you must consider that additional cost if necessary. These refrigerators are great options for smaller kitchens like in an apartment, for smaller families who may not need as much refrigerator space, and for those who love the look of a flush design.
