When shopping for a new refrigerator, most people start by measuring the width and height of their available space in the kitchen to see which refrigerators they can choose from. However, another important measurement to consider is depth. You’ll notice there are a variety of options for depth depending on if you go with a full-size, counter-depth, or built-in refrigerator. Some refrigerators will extend as far as 35 inches from the wall when you include the door handle. But for those who have a smaller kitchen, prefer less obtrusion from a large refrigerator, or prefer the built-in look for their refrigerator, but don’t want to pay the built-in price - counter-depth refrigerators are where it’s at.
Counter-depth refrigerators provide the best of both worlds of full-size and built-in refrigerators. They are freestanding refrigerators that are the same depth as your lower cabinets without requiring the high cost and extra installation of a built-in refrigerator while still providing a sleek look that doesn’t obstruct this high-traffic area. Here we compare two popular brands, GE Profile and Café Appliances, to help you decide which counter-depth refrigerator is right for your kitchen.
GE Profile offers counter-depth refrigerators in the French door configuration in a variety of fingerprint-resistant finishes; stainless steel, black stainless steel, and slate. If you opt for a refrigerartor with the exterior water and ice dispenser, you can choose the option for the Keurig K-Cup Brewing System and the Hands Free Autofill, and enjoy 22.1 cubic feet of capacity (ideal for a family of 4). If you choose against the water and ice dispenser, you gain 1 cubic feet for a total of 23.1 cubic feet. Either way, all of the GE Profile counter-depth models are 69 7/8 inches high, 35 3/4 inches wide, and 31 1/4 inches deep. Additional features include full-width electronic temperautre-controlled drawers, Hot Water Scheduling, showcase LED lighting, and TwinChill evaporators. Prices average between $3,299 and $3,999. Café Appliances offers a few more configurations than GE Profile, including the French Door and side-by-side. It also offers different fingerprint-resistant finishes, such as matte black, matte white, and stainless steel, which can be paired with a variety of brushed metal handles. Most models are between 22.1 and 23.1 cubic feet capacity, but Café Appliances does offer a smaller size of 18.6 cubic feet with a 32 3/4 inches width for smaller spaces. Similar to GE Profile, Café refrigerators offer hot water scheduling, showcase LED lighting, TwinChill™ Evaporators, as well as Soft Touch Bin Liners and Turbo Freeze.
