Whether you choose an induction cooktop or a regular electric cooktop, glass cooktops are the most popular option for electric cooktops. These cooktops add a lustrous, sleek look to your kitchen and a continuous design to allow you to smoothly transfer pots and pans around the surface. They also offer convenient features like touchscreen controls, pre-programmed settings that simplify the cooking process, and a smooth surface to make clean-up a breeze.

Unfortunately, burnt foods, scorch marks, and streaking can quickly make your shiny surface an eyesore. Follow these basic instructions on cleaning up difficult messes and bringing life back to your glass cooktop surface.

What NOT To Do

There are a lot of myths going around about how to clean certain parts of your kitchens that can actually cause more harm than good, so we’d like to start with how to NOT clean your glass cooktop. For starters, never clean your glass stovetop with anything abrasive, such as steel pads or scrubby sponges, as these may actually cause permanent scratches on the surface. Next, never clean your glass cooktop while it’s still hot. It may be tempting to clean up any spills or messes before they harden, the cleaning agents can burn quickly and possibly damage the glass. Lastly, as illogical as it may seem, don’t use glass cleaner to clean your glass cooktop. The ammonia in the glass cleaner is actually too strong for cleaning a cooktop and can damage the glass surface.

How To Clean

Now that you’ve been warned with what not to use, here is how you properly clean your glass cooktop. What you will need is microfiber cloth, dish towels, baking soda, and white vinegar.

1. Once the surface is completely cool, wipe down the cooktop with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any dust or stray crumbs.
2. Sprinkle baking soda evenly across the surface.
3. Using a spray bottle, generously spray your white vinegar all over the baking soda until it foams up.
4. Dip your clean towel in hot water and wring out any excess liquid and place over the baking soda and white vinegar mix for about 15 minutes.
5. Use the towel to clean the entire surface, getting the surface as clean as possible.

6. Give the surface a final clean with more white vinegar and wipe it away with a dry microfiber cloth, buffing it to a sparkling shine.
Note: if there is still food residue remaining, simply repeat the process. If it remains stuck, carefully use a razor scraper to pry it off and repeat the process.
