Since we have been focusing on laundry this month, it only seemed fitting to share with you our favorite organization tips when it comes to the laundry room. While most laundry rooms are small, sometimes only taking up the size of a closet, a lot of work gets done in these spaces. Therefore, to make the most of your space, functionality must be the focus. Follow these tips to add functionality to your laundry room.
Cabinetry/Shelving If you don't already have cabinets or open shelves in your laundry room, either one or both are a great option to add storage for your laundry necessities (and much more depending on the size). Hang them above or next to the laundry pair, whichever works best for your space. One of our favorite storage solutions is built-in cabinets in place of pedestals for front load washers. Either way it's the starting place for storage and organization.

The Functional Shelf The first obvious space to utilize is the bare area right above the washer and dryer and below the hanging cabinets (that is, if you even have cabinets). Even if you already have plenty of storage space with your hanging cabinets, adding a shelf will give you easier access to your laundry necessities, such as detergents, dryer sheets, stain removers, etc. and even allows for cute decor. If you own a top load washer, a small shelf will suffice. However, if you have a front load washer, you can add a larger shelf that doubles for storage and a folding table.

Drying Racks Hanging your clothes is not only environmentally friendly, it'll also save you some money. Not to mention some fabrics just do better when they hang dry and are then tossed into the dryer for a few minutes of tumbling. Unfortunately, if you already dislike laundry, this simply means more work. Adding a drying rack directly in your laundry room takes the work out of hanging clothes and with all the creative solutions available you don't have to have much room to make it happen! Add a rod between cabinets, hang a rack that folds up and down as needed, suspend an old ladder, so much more!

Creative Sorter As you (should) already know, it's best to separate your fabrics so that you can wash them on their correct settings. As much fun as it is picking through stinky piles of towels and dirty socks, a laundry organizer will simplify your life (and look good while doing it!). Shelves with laundry baskets if you have the room for it, hanging canvas bags on the wall if you don't, there's a solution for every laundry room.
Detergent Holders If you love shopping in bulk for necessities like us, then you know how heavy detergent bottles can get. Attempting to lean a 10 lb. bottle over to pour liquid detergent into a tiny measuring cup can cause quite the mess. We suggest using inexpensive decanters as a simple dispenser for your detergent, fabric softener, and even bleach. This is also a great option if you don't care for the look of bright orange or green bottles as part of your decor.
A Place For The Pocket Stuff Whether it's a sock that recently became single or some loose pocket change, everything can have a place in your laundry room. Easily throw messy lint away, hang single socks to hold out for a partner's return, hold onto change for the parking meter, or avoid losing precious legos... The possibilities are endless (depending on the stuff your family keeps in their pockets)!
