Mirrored Backsplashes - Get Your Reflection on!

Mirrors in the kitchen are back! We are noticing a variety of different treatments for backsplashes in the kitchen. Used in a tasteful way, mirrored backsplashes can open up a kitchen, create a brighter environment or even an illusion of another room. Unlike the 1980’s trend where standards mirrors were used on many surfaces throughout the home, carefully selected backsplashes can take on several different finishes and looks without taking over your home. A few of the most popular mirrored styles include subway tile, antiqued finish, and mosaic finish.

Selecting the Right Placement and Finish When choosing mirror for any space, it is important to consider what visual space will be the main reflection? If you have a small kitchen with dark appliances and little light, you may not get the desired brightening effect you are hoping for. Look for a window directly opposite of the main space you’ll be installing your backsplash. This has the effect of a faux window, bringing nature inside and adding greenery to your workspace. If reflecting a window isn't an option, consider adding a mirrored backsplash in an area that makes it seem as though the kitchen opens into another room.

Finally, consider if there is anything, a countertop appliance for example, that that will be blocking the line of reflection? This will naturally darken or completely obscure your desired reflection effect. If this is the case, consider only using the mirrored backsplash in a select part of your kitchen.

In Select Places When you have a less than desirable area to reflect, there are several ways to get a beautiful look with mirrored backsplash. Choose a specific area of the kitchen to use backsplash. Hutches or directly behind the stovetop as an accent piece are popular choices.

Another option is to use an antiqued or smokey finish, as it will not directly reflect in 20/20 vision the line of reflection, but will still help to lighten up the workspace and add freshness to your kitchen.

Contemporary mirrored backsplashes are versatile and can be used in a variety of kitchens, using different finishes in a select place to draw attention, or used throughout the entire workspace to create a bright, open atmosphere. Which mirrored backsplash would you choose?
