We recently went over some basic ways you can get the most out of your refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, and cooktop with some simple care. Now find out how to get the most out of your washing machine, dryer, microwave, and garbage disposal.

The Washing Machine The most common problem with washing machines is caused by overuse of laundry detergent. Most washers only require 1-2 Tablespoons of detergent to properly wash your clothes but be sure to follow your owner’s manual. If your washer starts to smell like mildew, run a hot load with white vinegar and be sure to always leave the lid open after every load. Even though the water hoses are very durable, they can still tear or get holes over time so routinely check them to avoid leaks. Every once awhile tug on your washer back and forth to make sure the feet are balanced to avoid excessive vibration.

The Dryer Lint is the number one cause of needing a dryer repair. Always check your dryer lint trap before starting any dryer load. If it looks like too much lint has slipped past the trap, use a special vacuum extender to clean it out. It’s important to empty out every pocket before washing an item as screws, coins, and bobby pins can get stuck in crevices and cause damage to your dryer’s moving parts. And if you make the mistake of washing a disposable diaper (ugh), napkin (such a mess), or any flimsy paper product (how did this happen?!), be sure to shake every item out before placing them in the dryer. Lastly, give your dryer enough space behind so too much hot air doesn’t get trapped and check your dryer’s duct to make sure there’s nothing obstructing it.

Garbage Disposal It’s surprising how dirty your sink can get even though you’re using it all the time. Garbage disposals do a great job at getting rid of food waste, but the germs and bacteria can produce smells over time. Sprinkle a half-cup of baking soda down the disposal, followed by one cup of white vinegar, and then pour boiling water over it after a few minutes. You can also run 2 cups of ice and salt through the disposal to remove the grime and debris off the grinding elements, and half a lemon or lime at a time to deodorize your drain. And never, ever dispose hard objects including bones, shells, and fruit pits, as well as other items that can wreak havoc such as celery, coffee grounds, pasta, grease, and potato peels. Find out more ways you can care for your garbage disposal by clicking here.

MicrowaveThe first step to take care of your microwave is to make sure you’re using a microwave-safe container to hold your food contents. The wrong type of plastic can melt and metal can cause a serious fire. It’s also to best to place a cover, such as a paper towel, to avoid splatters. Secondly, if splatters or spillage does occur, remove the glass tray and wipe down immediately before it dries up. Baked on messes are more difficult to remove so your best option is to use steam. Just microwave a half-cup of water for two minutes and use a damp cloth to wipe down the inside. You can also spray a little cleaner in before microwaving the water for even easier removal of baked on foods. Lastly, if the door isn’t closing properly, call a professional to evaluate your microwave before using it again.
