Bosch 800 Models Comparisons

Posted on Feb 15th, 2021

If Bosch was known for just one appliance, it would definitely be their dishwasher. Always at the forefront of innovation, Bosch dishwashers use smarter technologies to clean and dry dishes seamlessly, all while barely making a hum. Just like a car that comes in different trim levels, Bosch dishwashers come in 5 different series: 100, 300, 500, and 800, and Benchmark. No matter the series, all Bosch dishwashers are engineered to the highest standards and undergo 485 quality checks to deliver quality that you can count on. One common question we get is the differences between the dishwashers within each series, such as the SHP878ZD5N and the SHPM78Z55N in the 800 Series. From outwards appearance these two dishwashers appear practically identical with their stainless steel finish to their pocket handles and hidden controls. They even have identical price points. So what makes these two models different? It takes a little digging, so let’s explore!

What's The Same?
The Bosch 800 Series is on the higher-end for Bosch dishwashers. These two dishwashers feature the RackMatic™ Adjustable upper rack which adjusts to 3 different heights and up to 9 separate rack positions to allow taller items to fit in the middle rack while leaving plenty of space for pots and pans below. You can then maximize on space with the Flexible 3rd Rack which has expandable wings that can lower to accommodate your deeper items and adjustable tines to fit awkward bulky items, adding up to 30% more space. Both dishwashers are so silent, coming in at a silent 42 dBA, and therefore requiring the InfoLight® to project a red light on the floor to let you know the cycle is even running. Bosch has recently invested in finding the best way to dry dishes and developed the patented CrystalDry™ technology that heats up moisture to 176˚ to get dishes 60% drier which can be found on both models. Other similar features include AquaStop® Leak Protection, FlexSpace™ Tines, LED Remaining Time Display, Speed 60® for hour-long cycle times, and the Sanitize Option to reduce bacteria.

What's Different?
With so many similarities, what is it that requires these two dishwashers to have a different model number? We had to do some digging but discovered the main differences are what the SHP878ZD5N has that the SHPM78Z55N does not, namely the ExtraScrub option. This wash cycle increases pressure and temperature in the entire lower rack of the dishwasher for hard-to-remove food stains. Additionally, the SHP878ZD5N features flexible silverware baskets that can be split into two pieces and placed anywhere in the dishwasher for added flexibility. Other than that, these two features are practically the same!
