Educational Lessons For Kids In The Kitchen

Posted on Mar 17, 2020

Whether school is out for summer or out for a break, the kitchen is a great place to continue education for children of all ages. Here are 6 different subjects you can teach while having fun with your kids in the kitchen.

Reading

Recipes involve reading one way or another. Back-of-box recipes involve simple instructions while cookbooks can contain entire pages about the recipe. Young children can learn how to read aloud basic ingredients and numbers, school-aged children can learn how to read through instructions in chronological order, while even older children can read up on the history and tradition of the recipe.

Math

No matter your child’s age, cooking and baking in the kitchen offer plenty of opportunities for teaching math for all age ranges. Recipes involve a whole range of difficulty in math, from easy counting of items like eggs for young children to multiplying fractions when doubling up on ingredients for older children. Cooking in the kitchen is a great way to offer real visuals, such as two eggs or measuring cups of flour, for your visual learners.

Art

Cooking and baking offer plenty of opportunities for getting creative in the kitchen. Whether you’re cutting out and decorating a cookie, rolling out dough, or putting together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, allow your children to explore their own creativity to create something entirely new they can be proud of.

Nutrition

Healthy eating starts in the kitchen and it starts at a young age. As you teach your children how to start cooking and putting together meals, you can teach them the importance of having a balanced meal. This is a great chance to show them what a healthy proportions looks like and give them a chance to put a meal together by themself.

Motor Skills

Young children can practice their motor skills through chopping up ingredients, mixing ingredients in a bowl, and pouring liquids without spilling. Learning to grasp kitchen tools will help them improve their hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Even though sometimes it can get a little messy, allow your children to get hands-on while preparing the meal.

Science

From cooking chicken in the oven to mixing yeast into bread, the kitchen is a laboratory where lot of science happens. We select ingredients, quantify through measurements, process the ingredients, and serve food to loved ones for observation. We then analyze what did well and where improvements could be made, taking notation for next time. You can also conduct experiments through individual testing, like comparing brownies with 2 eggs compared to brownies with 3 eggs, and so on.

Safety

One last lesson to learn in the kitchen is safety. Teach young children to stay away from hot items like burners and oven doors, and older children to safely handle sharp objects and teenagers how to avoid cross-contamination. Teaching children safety at a young age makes them aware of kitchen dangers and prepare them for the future.
