But First, A Little History The original founders, Sir Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel, initially imported Crosley appliances in New Zealand. The company grew quickly until the government initiated a ban on imports of manufactured products due to the currency being in such short supply. Fisher & Paykel reacted by changing their entire approach and setting up a factory and assembling appliances under license to companies such as the infamous Kelvinator. It soon acquired Shacklock Ltd which dominated the New Zealand cooking appliance market. Fisher & Paykel opened international markets in the 1970’s to being sold in over 50 countries by the mid 2000’s. Turning their focus to research and development in the 1980s, Fisher & Paykel designed the world's first appliance using Brushless Direct Current Motors. Other world firsts include the DishDrawer™ Dishwasher and a top-loading dryer. In 2010, Fisher & Paykel underwent a major rebranding and refocused its commitment to how people use their kitchens, leading the company to create a philosophy around The Social Kitchen.

Significant Innovations Fisher & Paykel has made some major innovations over the last 82 years in the kitchen appliance industry. Fisher & Paykel applied its knowledge of electronic drive systems in manufacturing to appliances and invented the Brushless Direct Current Motor for washing machines. This design later gave way to the revolutionary Smart Drive™ technology, which is the platform for all of the washing machines. Other significant innovations such as the world’s first drawer based dishwasher, the DishDrawer™ - also uses the SmartDrive™ wash mechanism for better dish care. Fisher & Paykel also invented world-first ActiveSmart™ Foodcare – helping to keep your food fresher for longer by constantly monitoring your refrigerator and adapting to maintain a controlled environment and optimum temperature. Its culture of curiosity and creativity allowed Fisher & Paykel's development of CoolDrawer™, a multi-temperature drawer-based refrigerator that changes between five refrigeration modes at the touch of a button.
